Keeping Jersey Special - The Chief Minister's new initiative

10 June 2008

In the week of World Environment Day and in the lead up to Jersey Environment Week, Senator Frank Walker, Chief Minister, revealed his Vision for a Greener Island and propose a major new initiative ‘Keeping Jersey Special’, which will put the environment at the heart of the Council of Minister’s agenda.

Protecting our environment and maintaining open green space have come through as key issues with high levels of support, coupled to a demonstrated public desire and willingness to adopt better behaviours on environmental issues.

Senator Walker commented “I want to set measurable and achievable targets that are supported by Islanders along with definite steps of how these will be achieved or even exceeded.  There will be a focus on the Government getting its own house in order before asking others to do more. “  He also added “As a small, nimble society Jersey is well-placed to take action that will both deal with local issues and also generate major new business opportunities that will enhance and differentiate our reputation as a good place to do business in the global economy.”

The talk took place on Tuesday 3rd June at The Royal Yacht Hotel at 6.30pm. To download a transcipt of the speech, please click here
